Facts About The Elephant Sanctuary

World-class veterinary care: The sanctuary veterinarians are experts specializing in treating the diseases of confinement and trauma.

  • Dr. Steven Scott, DVM, Sanctuary Veterinarian of Record has provided superior services to elephants since 2006, healing many who were considered hopeless by  zoo veterinarians.
  • Dr. Susan Mikota, DVM, who resides at the Sanctuary, has written the definitive veterinary text on elephant medicine

Elephant transport experts:  The sanctuary has a proven track record of successfully transporting elephants, having safely transported 17 elephants to the Sanctuary.

Accredited and licensed:

  • USDA licensed
  • Accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries
  • Accredited by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, which mandates elephant care standards by law. The State of Tennessee elephant care standards have been adopted by 29 other states (none of which are Texas).
    • NOTE:  The Dallas Zoo is subject only to Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards, which are voluntary and minimal. For instance, AZA suggests that an elephant have living space of only the size of a two car garage. Tennessee law far exceeds AZA voluntary standards

Rehabilitation Experts:  The Elephant Sanctuary has been profiled on ABC’s 20/20, as THE place for psychologically damaged elephants to heal.

Elephants love water. At The Elephant Sanctuary, elephants have free access to ponds and streams.
At the Dallas Zoo, Jenny has a small pool of stagnant water.
